...Oral health is a well-recognized, integral part of overall health and as such must play a significant role in any national health-care initiative. Together, dentists, physicians, patients and patient advocacy groups can work toward mutually beneficial results. Oral health should not be excluded from national healthcare. Properly managed basic oral health care, combined with subsequent better general health, would produce a substantial, overall individual and national healthcare savings.

In medical and in dental care, the initial costs of providing proper screenings and prioritizing delivery of all accepted preventative services and the inclusion of 46.5 million people in the United States that currently are without healthcare coverage would not only produce better health, but serve to reduce catastrophic- and emergency-service expenses nationwide. With the initial extension of coverage for such services as a basis, additional individual and societal healthcare cost reduction would also be realized.

Any successful patient-empowerment in medical and dental care necessitates responsible review of evolving healthcare delivery options, along with basic understanding of the complexities within designated individual or group healthcare delivery contracts and national and state healthcare delivery mandates….
